From watching the videos I have come to realize that jazz is not just one thing; thus, making it a combination of everything. Jazz is the freedom of music, where musicians can take the music and make it their own in order to create something wholly unique and creative. Jazz does not have to have one definition, because it can mean different things to different people, as well as musicians. I got the feeling that jazz was a sense of community, where communication is open between musicians, either in a big band, or a smaller 4-piece for jazz fusion. This sense of community is about finding out bits and pieces of each member of the band in the moment. It is not about the past or the future. It is about living and loving each other in the moment expressing one’s true self. Jazz is the language of the spirit that is close to the heart and comes from within. Jazz also has a way of taking people’s life experiences and using personal emotions to create a brand new thing. Jazz is everything.
